Wow… what an adventure. Six weeks Indonesia, six weeks of salt air, sunburnt skin, warm sun and slow mornings that stretched into forever.
It became something magical, something I didn’t see coming. A time that shifted everything, the way I see, the way I move, the way I feel and maybe now, it’s starting to make sense. Why we didn’t our dream trip happen yet, why the timing fell the way it did. Because maybe we weren’t meant to be there yet. Maybe the tides were still turning, waiting for the right moment to bring us here.
Flying into Indonesia felt nostalgic. I grew up coming here, heavy surfboards to move around, back packs on, sand between your toes, sunshine on your skin. Those family trips shaped me. Last year, I came alone. My first solo trip —a test of spirit and a quiet kind of freedom. But this time was different. Flying in with my best mate by my side —the excitement hit different. It felt like coming home, but seeing it with new eyes.
Bali sparkled on the surface, but beneath the rhythm of music and clinking glasses, the soul grew restless. Too many people, too much noise, and the place felt hazed.
Looking back now, it makes sense as to why our bodies got sick, why the air felt heavy. After nine days, we turned toward the unknown, no plan, just a feeling pulling us elsewhere. We followed place of uncrowded waves, to a place of palm trees and fewer faces, where time moved slower, and life breathed easier.
The journey was long —two delayed flights, a radical six-hour drive through the jungle. By the time we arrived the world was asleep, and the stars welcomed us at midnight.
Waking up having no sense of direction or not knowing the place had its own kind of magic , a strange, cool feeling. This journey was long with its windy, dodgy, sketchy roads, where I think anyone would just had to just trust that the universe and the people beside you are keeping you safe.
The next morning brought a new kind of test —a man down, a worry that could have ended it all. But like I said before, the universe has a way of taking care of you. We found help, and the healing began to take shape. Looking back, the whole adventure was worth every worry.
Surfing quiet waves, uncovering more of my own rhythm in the surf, endless games of pool, card games, beautiful sunsets and watching unfamiliar faces turn into friends I’ll never forget.
